Filmmaker Bong Joon Ho received a massive profile and name-recognition boost recently with the ground-breaking success of his 2019 Oscar winner: Parasite. I was glad to see this extra attention going his way as I think he’s one of the best filmmakers working today. I hope at least some of the new audience members that Parasite broke through to have gone back to check out the rest of Bong’s filmography and I hope that outside interest has continued on to further South Korean cinema as a whole, as their film industry has been putting out many of the best films of recent years in my eyes.

My first exposure to Bong Joon-ho’s work was his 2006 film The Host, which is in a league of its own as far as monster movies are concerned. I have enjoyed every film that Bong Joon-ho has released. His first feature film, Barking Dogs Never Bite, was the last film of his I had left to watch.

As a filmmaker myself, it’s always interesting and often educational to go back and look at the start of a great filmmaker’s career. One question that is sure to arise with a debut is, does it look like a “first film”. If you happened to…
